Bassirou Diomaye Faye was inaugurated on Tuesday, April 2, as the Senegal’s youngest President, following a landslide victory in the first round of elections. His victory came just 10 days after being released from prison, with a promise of sweeping reforms.
At 44 years old, Faye, who had never previously held elected office, clinched the presidency after securing the support of the ruling party. The inauguration ceremony, attended by several African leaders, took place in the new town of Diamniadio, near Dakar.
Standing before the gathered officials, Faye took the oath, pledging to faithfully execute his duties as President of the Republic of Senegal. He promised to abide by the Constitution and laws, defend the nation’s integrity and independence, and work towards African unity.
The official transition of power from outgoing President Macky Sall will occur at the presidential palace in Dakar. Faye was among the political opponents released from prison under an amnesty announced by Sall just days before the March 24 presidential election, which Sall had sought to delay. Despite being in detention, Faye initiated his campaign.
As a former tax inspector, Faye becomes Senegal’s fifth president since gaining independence from France in 1960, and notably, he is the first to openly acknowledge being in a polygamous marriage.
