Bandits have carried out deadly attacks on three separate communities in the Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State, resulting in the tragic loss of approximately 26 lives.
Among the victims were six members of the state security forces, specifically the Benue State Community Volunteer Guards and Livestock Guards. These security personnel were deployed to provide protection for a family as they laid their loved one to rest.
The attacks occurred between Saturday and Monday in the Mbakunwande and Jaora communities, as well as along the Naka/Adoka road. Reports indicate that six security operatives were killed in Saturday’s attack, followed by the deaths of 14 individuals on Sunday and six more on Monday.
Chairman of the Gwer West LGA, Henry Agba, confirmed the tragic events, revealing that 26 people lost their lives and many others sustained injuries. He recounted the harrowing details, stating, “The attack began on Saturday when six security operatives, comprising members of the Benue Security Community Volunteer Guards and Livestock Guards, were ambushed and killed while escorting a grieving family to bury their loved one in the village of Mbakunwande.”
Agba continued, “Late on Saturday night, around 11 pm, another community in Jaora was attacked, resulting in the deaths of 14 individuals. Additionally, on Monday, along the Naka/Adoka road, another assault occurred, leading to the discovery of six bodies. Many others were injured and are currently receiving treatment at local clinics within the LGA.”
Agba further mentioned that the incidents had been reported to the police and Joseph Har, the state security adviser, who visited one of the affected areas on Monday.
