Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has urged medical professionals across the country to make greater sacrifices, emphasizing that President Bola Tinubu is also making tough decisions to improve the nation.
The governor made this plea during a meeting with a delegation from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) led by its national president, Dr. Uche Ojinmah, at his office in Calabar.
Highlighting the importance of sacrifices for national development, Governor Otu stated, “President Bola Tinubu is making difficult decisions. Today’s sacrifices will lead to positive outcomes. Great nations are built on a foundation of sacrifice. Sacrifices are essential for Nigeria’s progress. Therefore, I call on you to join in making more sacrifices.”
Governor Otu expressed concern about the emigration of medical personnel to neighboring countries and acknowledged the fierce global competition for medical professionals, which has resulted in a shortage in Nigeria.
Addressing the shortage of medical doctors in Cross River State’s health sector, Ojinmah called for the recruitment of more doctors and the implementation of a new salary scale. He also commended the state’s urban renewal program and the aesthetic improvements in Calabar and its surroundings, emphasizing the importance of aesthetics for good health.
Ojinmah further disclosed that a new leadership would emerge for the NMA after the conference in Calabar. He praised the state’s efforts in improving aesthetics, noting that living in a clean and comfortable environment is vital for overall well-being.
