Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, attributes the deaths of 35 individuals in Kogi and Enugu states to the poor state of road infrastructure and insecurity prevalent under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
In posts shared on his official handle on Wednesday, Peter Obi expressed concern over the tragic accidents that claimed the lives of 19 people in Kogi on Sunday and 16 in Enugu on Tuesday. He emphasized the urgent need to prioritize the improvement of internal roads over ambitious projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Superhighway.
While the exact cause of the accidents remains unclear, Peter Obi pointed to the deteriorating road conditions and security challenges as contributing factors. He lamented the loss of lives and extended condolences to the affected families, injured individuals, as well as the governments and people of Kogi and Enugu states.
Obi’s stance on prioritizing internal road infrastructure over grand projects has previously led to disagreements with the Nigerian federal government, particularly regarding the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal highway. Despite accusations of incitement against the Tinubu government, Obi remains steadfast in advocating for essential infrastructure improvements to prevent further tragedies.
