US Election: A recent Quinnipiac University poll released on Wednesday indicates that President Joe Biden’s narrow lead over former President Donald Trump is diminishing, despite Trump’s ongoing criminal trial in New York City.
According to Fox News, Trump’s trial, which involves 34 counts of falsifying business records, commenced last week with jury selection and has proceeded to opening arguments this week. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The poll reveals that the presidential race is now neck and neck, with both Biden and Trump tied at 46% support. When independent presidential candidates Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (16%), Dr. Cornel West (3%), and the Green Party’s Jill Stein (3%) are included, Biden and Trump remain deadlocked at 37%.
These figures represent a notable narrowing of the gap for Trump, who trailed Biden 48%-45% in Quinnipiac’s March poll. With the inclusion of Kennedy, West, and Stein, Trump holds a slight one-point lead over Biden at 39%-38%.
Meanwhile, Biden’s job approval rating remains low at 35% support, down from 37% in March, with 61% expressing disapproval, up from 59%.
Regarding the charges Trump faces in his ongoing New York trial, 46% of respondents believe he did something illegal, while 45% disagree. However, 27% think he did something unethical but not illegal, and 18% believe he did nothing wrong.
In addition, 21% stated they would be less inclined to vote for Trump if he were convicted, while 62% indicated it would not impact their vote, and 15% said they would be more likely to vote for him.
Trump continues to assert that the trial is purely political and maintains his innocence.
