The Lagos State government has announced its plans to distribute food items to 500,000 households across the state through unions and local governments. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu shared this update on Wednesday as part of the state’s efforts to alleviate economic hardship resulting from the removal of fuel subsidies and the devaluation of the naira.
Addressing the public at Alausa in Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu reiterated the commitment made during his previous media chat in February to establish various avenues for citizens to access affordable food and provide support in health, education, and food security. He emphasized that these efforts were not mere promises but initiatives actively underway.
Highlighting the main initiative, Sanwo-Olu stated, “We are here to launch our endeavor to directly assist about 500,000 households. Over the past six weeks, we have prepared food packages to be distributed through local governments, community development associations, religious bodies, and other stakeholders to reach the most vulnerable in our society.”
Regarding the ‘Ounje Eko’ initiative, where discounted food items are sold, the governor mentioned the establishment of 59 makeshift markets across the state and emphasized that the promised 25% discount on Sundays has been consistently upheld.
Sanwo-Olu also warned against hoarding, stressing that the distributed items are intended for those genuinely in need and should not be withheld or shared among specific groups.
