Ajah market: The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps has apprehended two traders as its operatives conducted the demolition of shops constructed around Akiogun Road, Oniru, within the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of the state. This information was revealed in a post shared on the official social media handle of the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Wednesday.
In a video footage observed by our correspondent, Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps workers were seen initiating the demolition of the shops, while some vendors attempted to salvage their goods.
The post further stated that during a routine morning patrol in the Lekki-Ajah area, officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps demolished several kiosks along Chevron Drive. Tokunbo noted that after the traders were evicted last week, they reoccupied the same location, leading to the arrest of two individuals.
“While conducting monitoring and enforcement activities in the Lekki-Ajah corridor this morning, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps observed the resurgence of street traders who had been displaced last week along Chevron Drive. The area has been cleared once again, and two individuals have been taken into custody.”
In a similar incident, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office sealed the Carillion Construction office building at Victoria Island for unlawfully discharging sewage into the public drainage system using a pumping machine.
“On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office took action to seal off the office premises of Carrillion Construction located at Plot 10b, T.F Kuboye Street, Oniru Extension, Victoria Island. This action was prompted by the discovery that the building had been engaged in the illegal discharge of sewage into the public drainage system through the use of a pumping machine.
In response to a petition from the Omole Phase Two Community Development Association, operatives from the Monitoring Enforcement and Compliance Department of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, and the Environment and Special Offences Taskforce conducted an operation on Tuesday to remove illegal structures situated on the drainage setback of Somide Odujinrin Avenue leading into the estate,” he stated.
Tokunbo emphasized that the Lagos State Government is steadfast in its stance against the unauthorized release of untreated sewage into public drainage systems. “The Lagos State Government reaffirms its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy regarding the unlawful discharge of untreated sewage wastewater into public drains and water bodies. Citizens are urged to refrain from this illegal practice, which poses a serious threat to our environment.”
Previously, PUNCH Metro had reported that operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps recently cleared illegal structures erected around the perimeter fence of Salvation Army Primary School in the Ayobo, Ipaja area of the state.
