FCT police are investigating NANS factional clash. The Federal Capital Territory Police Command confirmed on Tuesday that it has initiated an investigation into the recent spate of attacks and counterattacks between factional leaders of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) within the territory.
In a statement sent via WhatsApp in response to inquiries from our correspondent, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, affirmed the commencement of the investigation.
A viral video circulating on X depicted armed individuals assaulting a solitary young man and vandalizing a bus adorned with images of a factional NANS leader and a former presidential candidate of the association, Chibuzor Obi, at Zone 8, Abuja.
Responding to the incident, SP Adeh assured that the police were committed to maintaining the peace enjoyed by residents of the territory and pledged to provide updates on further developments.
She stated, “The FCT police command is aware of the news making rounds about the recent attacks and counterattacks launched by the factional NANS leaders against one another in the Federal Capital Territory and therefore wishes to state that the police command has commenced an investigation into the matter.
“The command is ensuring no disruption of peace being enjoyed by residents is allowed. Further development would be communicated.”
Efforts to reach both the substantive NANS president, Lucky Emenike, and the factional president, Chinazor Obi, for comments on the matter were unsuccessful as calls and text messages went unanswered.
Similarly, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, did not respond to attempts to reach out.
It is recalled that The PUNCH previously reported incidents involving NANS factions, notably the storming of the National Hospital, Abuja, on December 1 and 2, 2023. During this event, a faction attacked two injured members of another faction receiving treatment at the hospital, leading to disruptions and panic among patients. Police intervention was necessary to restore order and secure the hospital premises.
Dr. Tayo Haastrup, the spokesperson for the National Hospital, confirmed the attack and stated that the intruders aimed to assault the injured members undergoing treatment.
