DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the Police Public Relations Officer for the command, disclosed this in a statement shared on the command’s official channels on Tuesday.
According to the statement, officers from the Abakaliki Road Police Division, Enugu State Command, supported by vigilant citizens, arrested Mmaduabuchi Okonkwo on April 10, 2024, around 3 pm, at the Old IMT Bus Stop, Abakaliki Road, Enugu. The arrest was made following allegations of Okonkwo’s involvement in possession and circulation of counterfeit naira notes.
The statement further revealed that a total of ₦40,000 suspected counterfeit one-thousand-naira notes were seized from Okonkwo.
Reportedly, Okonkwo attempted to use one of the counterfeit notes to pay for transportation in a minibus. However, the driver detected the forgery and raised an alarm, leading to Okonkwo’s apprehension.
During interrogation, Okonkwo confessed to acquiring the counterfeit notes by exchanging ₦25,000 genuine currency for ₦50,000 worth of counterfeit currency with an undisclosed accomplice. He admitted to spending ₦10,000 of the counterfeit money, with the remaining ₦40,000 being recovered from him.
The statement concluded by stating that Okonkwo would be arraigned and prosecuted upon completion of investigations.
