Victor Boniface: In a historic moment for Bayer Leverkusen, the club clinched their first-ever Bundesliga trophy in their 120-year history, ending Bayern Munich’s 11-year reign with an impressive 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Sunday.
Xabi Alonso’s team understood that a victory would secure the title with five games left, and they delivered a commanding performance that showcased their championship credentials, extending their remarkable unbeaten streak to 43 games across all competitions.
Florian Wirtz’s hat-trick, along with goals from Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka, sealed the triumph. However, Boniface, whose scoring prowess has been crucial to Leverkusen’s title push, was humble in accepting individual accolades.
“I didn’t lead anybody, we led ourselves,” remarked the Nigerian striker on the social media platform X Monday, highlighting the collective effort behind the club’s success.
Boniface kickstarted the scoring with a penalty in the 25th minute and later provided an assist for Xhaka’s goal. Despite missing four months due to injury, he has amassed 11 goals and nine assists in just 18 Bundesliga appearances this season.
Alonso expressed his pride in the team’s achievement, stating, “This is a very special moment for the club. Winning the Bundesliga for the first time in 120 years is something extraordinary. The players have been exceptional, and I am immensely proud of everyone.”
With the Bundesliga title secured, Leverkusen now has the chance to become the first team to go unbeaten throughout an entire Bundesliga campaign. Additionally, they are still in contention for an unprecedented treble, with the DFB-Pokal and UEFA Europa League titles within reach.
