The Coroner’s Inquest at the Ogba Magistrate Court investigating the death of 12-year-old Dowen College student Sylvester Junior Oromoni in Lekki has concluded that his demise resulted from negligence on the part of his parents and doctor.
Presiding Coroner Magistrate Mikhail Kadiri determined that Oromoni’s passing was due to inadequate treatment for his enlarged liver, a condition that led to his death on November 30, 2021.
Initially, Oromoni’s death was attributed to bullying and the ingestion of an alleged poisonous substance forced upon him at school. He had reportedly mentioned being assaulted by five senior students of Dowen College, including individuals named Favour Benjamin, Edward Begue, Ansel Temile, Kenneth Inyang, and Micheal Kashamu, son of the late Senator Buruji Kashamu.
However, on January 5, 2022, the Lagos State Government absolved the five students and five employees of Dowen College from any responsibility in Oromoni’s death.
Kadiri emphasized that the deceased’s health declined under the care of “PW 3,” the doctor involved, who allegedly neglected Oromoni for over 32 hours. The coroner concluded that the death was avoidable had proper care been provided and timely medical intervention sought.
“The deceased’s demise was avoidable, but for the negligence of the parents and PW 3,” Kadiri stated, highlighting the unnecessary suffering endured by Oromoni due to the delayed medical attention and care.
