Nigerians plunged into darkness as the national grid collapse. Once again, Nigeria faced a power grid collapse in the early hours of Monday, April 15, 2024, according to data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org). The collapse resulted in an unprecedented zero Megawatts (MW) recorded around 2:00 am, with only a meager 52.3MW generated by 7:10 am the same day, as reported by BusinessDay.
The blackout had widespread consequences nationwide, with electricity distribution companies (DisCos) struggling to manage the sudden and prolonged outage. Many areas experienced over five hours of darkness as the grid struggled to recover fully.
This incident marked the fifth grid disturbance in 2024, adding to the persistent challenges in Nigeria’s power sector. In a year already riddled with disruptions, this latest collapse stood out as particularly severe, exacerbating the ongoing struggles faced by consumers and industry stakeholders.
Despite the significant impact of the blackout, neither the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) nor the DisCos have issued an official statement regarding the cause or resolution of the crisis.
As of the filing of this report, TCN had yet to confirm the occurrence, leaving the public and stakeholders in the dark about the source and resolution of the latest crisis.
