Bobrisky has been sentenced. The Federal High Court in Lagos issued a verdict on Friday, sentencing the controversial crossdresser, Idris Olarewaju Okuneye, commonly known as Bobrisky, to six months in prison without the option of a fine for defacing the naira.
Justice Abimbola Awogboro, in delivering the sentence, emphasized its importance as a deterrent against similar offenses involving the mutilation or misuse of the currency.
During the proceedings, the judge inquired about Bobrisky’s gender, to which he promptly affirmed his identity as male.
The court specified that the imprisonment period commenced on March 24, 2024, the date of Bobrisky’s arrest. This ruling followed his guilty plea to the charge of defacing the naira, as filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which occurred on April 5.
Originally scheduled for April 9, 2024, the sentencing was delayed due to a federal holiday declared for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
Following his conviction, Bobrisky appealed for leniency, citing ignorance of the law regarding the misuse of the naira during his allocutus. He expressed remorse and proposed using his social media platform, boasting over five million followers, to educate others about the appropriate handling of money.
However, the judge underscored that ignorance of the law does not excuse misconduct. Bobrisky reiterated his regret and pledged not to repeat the offense, requesting a second chance to use his influence for positive awareness.
The judge acknowledged his plea but upheld the sentence, emphasizing the need for compliance with legal standards.
