Wike Mandates Eight-Month Shutdown FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has issued a directive for the closure of the International Conference Centre in Abuja for a duration of eight months to facilitate necessary renovation work.
This decision came on Monday following the minister’s inspection of the facility, which was originally constructed by Julius Berger in 1991. Expressing dismay at the substandard condition of the center, Wike expressed frustration at the decision to entrust maintenance to an incompetent firm.
Highlighting recurring embarrassments caused by power outages, inadequate cooling systems, and general decay, Wike emphasized the urgent need for rehabilitation to meet international standards. Consequently, all scheduled events at the venue have been canceled.
In efforts to expedite the renovation process, Wike has engaged the original contractor, Julius Berger, to undertake the task. He projected completion within seven to eight months, with the expectation of delivering a facility that meets international expectations.
While expressing a commitment to hold the previous contractor accountable, Wike also cautioned the new Managing Director of Abuja Investment Company Limited (AICL), Ambassador (Dr) Maureen Tamuno, to ensure effective execution of her responsibilities. He emphasized his readiness to take decisive action if performance standards were not met, underscoring the importance of delivering a world-class International Conference Centre.
