Microsoft stated that China is intensifying its utilization of AI-generated content and counterfeit social media profiles to stoke discord not only within the United States but also in other regions, as per the latest findings from Microsoft’s threat center.
According to Clint Watts, general manager of the Microsoft Threat Analysis Center, Beijing has significantly escalated its targeting efforts and enhanced the sophistication of its influence campaigns. These operations involve the use of fabricated social media accounts to gauge public opinion on divisive issues and potentially sway the outcome of events like the US presidential election in China’s favor.
Furthermore, China has amplified its deployment of AI-generated content to advance its objectives globally, including within the United States. The report highlights how Chinese influence efforts capitalize on current events, such as incidents like a train derailment in Kentucky or wildfires in Maui, to foster distrust in the US government.
The report suggests a strategic approach by China, indicating a deliberate attempt to discern which demographic of US voters supports particular issues or positions, and which topics are most polarizing, especially leading up to significant events like the US presidential election.
Despite these efforts, the report concludes that there is scant evidence of the influence operations successfully swaying public opinion thus far.
Notably, the report also reveals that social media accounts purportedly affiliated with the Chinese government have been involved in impersonating US voters to influence elections, with a particular focus on divisive domestic issues such as climate change, immigration, and racial tensions.
Microsoft has observed a surge in the use of AI-generated content in China-linked online influence operations, notably during the presidential election in Taiwan. Looking ahead, the report predicts that China will likely continue to create and amplify AI-generated content to further its interests, especially with major elections scheduled in countries like India, South Korea, and the United States.
Additionally, the report highlights North Korea’s adoption of AI for various malicious activities, including cryptocurrency theft, supply chain attacks, and military intelligence gathering.
